Chess is a game which has been around for centuries in one form or another. It is considered to be both art and science. While it is a complex game, there are many who say the opening theory is reaching its zenith. One alternative is Fischer Random or 960chess. The rules of Fischer random allow for over 960 starting positions, 959 of which have yet to be explored in much detail. I think that one day in the far future this will replace regular chess as the preferred tournament style of chess.

Bobby Fischer was a profound player who, in my opinion, has yet to be fully fathomed with his deep ideas, strategies and tactics.

Babaschess
Here are some Button files for use with Babaschess interface when you want to use some of the different bots on FICS:
Endgame bot buttons
Tournament(MAMER) buttons
Puzzle bot buttons
Team_Game buttons FICS TeamGameBot project page FICS TeamGameBot help page
This set of buttons uses the Babaschess bot to get information on interface usage on the server.
This set of buttons uses the Tschedulebot to get information about tournament times on the server.
This set of buttons uses the relay bot to assist in observing games being relayed to the server.
This set of buttons uses the Stat bot to assist in getting extra information about someones playing record(s).
This is the Keyboard Shortcuts that I use to assist with alot of different things on FICS. You will need to also download the left handed layout files I have listed below in order to use the ctrl+Alt+# shortcuts I have in the keyboard shortcuts file. But the keyboard shortcuts file will still download just fine for you if you choose not to download the layout files too. Just don't hit the ctrl+alt+# combination!
Download these files to your c:\documents and settings\botchvinik\my documents\babaschess\customCmd.Of course, don't forget to replace "botchvinik" with your own user name. Many of the things in these files will be good examples of ways to make your own shortcuts etc to use on FICS!
Here is the piece set I currently use with Babaschess:

If you want to use this set download each of these bitmaps to a new directory called
c:\program files\babaschess\data\piece\botchvinik4. First make the directory. Next, right click on each piece above and "save image as" to the new directory.Below is a link to an executable zip file that will automatically put the chess pieces in the right spot for you:
Botchvinik4 Chess Pieces This is the set of left handed window layouts that
I have made for use with Babaschess: This is the updated Channelbot plugin
for FICS that someone has put together for Babaschess.
It has the channel tabs in this version which makes channelbot so much easier to use.
I would like to thank PhilK of FICS for his contribution by rewriting this plugin for Babaschess so that the tabs work now!
This version of the Channelbot plugin will add new channel tabs to your channel window when
something gets typed into a channelbot channel for the first time after you login.
For basic installation and usage instruction of the channelbot plugin go HERE
Here are some themes that smalldreams
from FICS has put together for Babaschess
Here are some chessboard squares for Babaschess that
first Gorgonian worked on and then myself later. This first set of squares is CGC_AQUAMARINE
Take
CGC_AQUAMARINE.zip
and unzip it to your /squares directory in order to use these squares.
This next set is CGC_ORANGE
Take
CGC_ORANGE.zip
and unzip it to your /squares directory in order to use these squares.
I wanted to put this on here for quite a long time now. So here it is, a sneaky old school way to combine pgn files:

These are just opposites(for the most part)
of the default layouts provided when you downloaded Babaschess. If you want to use these
layouts, download each of them to this directory called
c:\users\
botchvinik
\My Documents\Babaschess\Layouts. BUT MAKE SURE TO CHANGE THE
NAME IN THE DIRECTORY I LISTED FROM BOTCHVINIK TO YOUR NAME ON THE COMPUTER THAT YOU ARE USING!

PgnGlue.bat
Actually you don't need a multiple stars program to merge (append) pgn-files.
The following DOS tip will do the trick fast and easy (thanks to Lars Venø
Jakobsen).
Make a text file with two lines:
for %%f IN (*.PGN) DO type %%f>>collect.out
ren collect.out collect.pgn
and save it as "somename.bat" in the pgn file folder.
Be sure your editor doesn't append "txt" to the file name (like "somename.bat.txt").
The extension must be "bat".
When you double-click on the icon, all pgn files in the folder will be collected in one file, "collect.out" which is then renamed to pgn.
You can even filter the files; if for instance you write (a*.pgn) only files with "a" as first char will be merged.
It also works from the command line in DOS, but then you must remember to rename the file.
Just replace the double "%%" with a single "%", like in:
for %f IN (*.PGN) DO type %f>>collect.out
I got this idea from
PGNUTILS
For those of you who are not familiar with DOS, these few things have been assumed:
1. Make a folder with ONLY THE PGN FILES YOU INTEND TO COMBINE.
2. Put those pgn files in this folder and also put the aforementioned somename.bat file in the folder also.
3. Doubleclick or execute the somename.bat file.
4. After the DOS window opens and runs the file, type exit or just close the window.
5. Refresh(or open) the folder that contained your pgn files to be combined and notice a new file there called collect.pgn
That is your new pgn file containing the contents of the other pgn files!
